January 2010
Mt Barney Lodge recently welcomed the 2010 New Year and the much anticipated rain at the same time. The Scenic Rim really has been transformed into an emerald oasis.

Combined rainfalls of 100mm+ contributed to some brief flooding of the creeks, and overflowed into all the waterholes along the Logan River and Barney Creek. Waterholes are now at their best, and are crystal clear down to 3m depths. Waterfalls like the Cronan Creek Cascades and upstream “bush shower” at the Lower Portals have been recharged, and are great fun. There are a great variety of creek based walks and other bushwalks to enjoy over the heat of summer.

Walks are best planned to be enjoyed before 10am, and after 3pm – there is nothing wrong with hiking into a waterhole, and hanging out all day with a picnic lunch and a book, and walking out again in the cool of the day. My favourite strategy is to walk into Cronan Creek Cascades in the cool of the afternoon, when the sun moves behind Mt Barney at about 4pm – great natural air-conditioning! – and after a refreshing swim, walk out again by headtorch and the night sounds of the Australian bush. If you are not sure about the details of this walk, have a chat to me when you check-in to Mt Barney Lodge.

Your family will enjoy the shaded campsite with creek frontage, and rustic cabins and genuine Queenslander Homesteads at Mt Barney Lodge. They are all within a few minutes walk of the creek and waterholes, and there is plenty of shade and opportunity for kids to paddle and build eco boats and endless rock dams in the crystal clear water.

It’s not too late to factor in some quality family time at Mt Barney Lodge before the school holidays run out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM ALL OF US.

Tracey
