Eat Local Week - Mojito recipe

Lime Mojito

The Lime Mojito is a favorite Mt Barney Lodge "local food". (and with the staff!)

23rd -30th June is Eat Local Week.

Local foods are those that are grown within 100km of their consumption - but closer is better.

All the ingredients in this recipe are sourced from the Lodge, even the crushed ice which is frozen creek water from our creek frontage (did you know we are at the headwaters of the Logan River?!?!). That is zero foodmiles - even tastier!!

Only the Bundaberg White Rum comes from a little further away.

Today I learnt that in 2000, Bundaberg Distillery was sold to British company, Diageo, so it was time to research Tamborine Mountain Distillery, Australia’s most Internationally-awarded Distillery,  for a local substitute!

From a health angle - local food is better for you. The shorter the time between the farm and your table, the less likely it is that nutrients will be lost from fresh food. Food imported from far away is older and has traveled on trucks or planes, and sat in warehouses before it gets to you.

Lime Mojitos really do make you feel good! And even better, local foods are a good eco choice. Local food benefits the environment and wildlife. Well-managed farms provide ecosystem services: they conserve fertile soil, protect water sources, and sequester carbon from the atmosphere. The farm environment is a patchwork of habitats that provide shelter for wildlife in our communities. Here's cheers to the common sense of  local food!
