Mt Barney Flex with the PushUp Challenge

by | Jun 8, 2023 | News, Uncategorized

If you’re staying with us over the next 20 days, you may see our staff doing some unusual things.

Tash, our housekeeper has roped us into The Push-Up Challenge. So, if a staff member randomly drops to give you 20 make sure to cheer them along.

We’ve signed up to complete 3144 push ups each under the team name “Mt Barney Flex” …  or alternatives (squats, lunges, sit-ups) by June 23rd to raise awareness and funds for mental health. Each exercise we will do represents one life lost to suicide in 2021.

Our motivation for completing the challenge is to raise money for Lifeline with the added bonus of getting fitter and improving our own moods. 99% of past participants said they felt fitter and stronger after completing The Push-Up Challenge and 97% also said their mood was improved. In the first few days of participating in the challenge some of our team members are already feeling the effects.

Here’s what our team is saying:

“It’s always a good idea to support a team challenge that boosts staff cohesion and creates a common goal for people who are very different in personality, background and role within the business. Push ups are a great leveller, and the shared pain is definitely a talking point! After a slow commencement I was supported into starting on day 3 by Tina who “banked” some spare push ups and could share them with me. Did I mention Tina is on crutches at the moment?!! Strong minds supporting weak motivation – this is a great analogy of what it is to be supporting others in the workplace whether it be a push up challenge, a workplace job where a team approach is needed, or support between co-workers for mental health. ” – Tracey – Mt Barney Lodge co-owner

“It’s all about informing the general community about their options. Suicide is never the answer, it affects more than just the person involved. All the Donations Mt Barney Flex receives goes direct to Lifeline, for them to help someone in need. The challenge is also great for self-esteem, character building etc.” – Tash – Housekeeper

“I’ve always been big on doing challenges that support great causes. Mt Barney Flex is donating all funds raised to Lifeline. They answer on average 130 calls every hour. Any way that I can help to bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention is worth a little physical discomfort. 3144 pushups is to bring to mind the number of suicides in 2021, that is nearly 9 people who are struggling and need help every day that couldn’t see any other option. I want to do what I can to remove the stigma of mental health. Thankfully, the challenge does allow us alternate ways to complete, as pushups aren’t doable for me at the moment, but I am substituting them with russian twists. I hope we do this annually, its been great to see the interaction and team work in our group chat” – Tina – Administration

All funds raised will go towards mental health and crises support services, helping to break stigmas and provide hope to those struggling with their mental health. On average, Lifeline receives 130 calls per hour, or one call every 28 seconds. Our team goal is to raise $500 but we would love to match our push-up total $3144!
