Learn navigation skills using map and compass

by | May 22, 2020 | Experience |

This popular 2½-day course is aimed at getting all participants to be competent at navigating in difficult and trackless terrains. It includes theory, a navigation-training manual to keep, and multiple walks based from the Lodge to really test out your new knowledge and skills. If you are looking to include this competency in a Cert II/III/IV then with an additional worksheet you can apply for RPL, speak to Innes for more details.

We will be accessing some of the wilderness areas and potentially navigating through rainforest.

The course begins on the first night and has two full days following, and is particularly suited to a weekend and includes camping or shared Hut accommodation.

I don’t know if words can truly explain how much of a legend Innes Larkin from Mt Barney Lodge, is. His knowledge about not only navigation, but on hiking, wildlife and the environment, is so impressive. To delve into the mind of Innes for 2 days is such a privilege.

Not only was he knowledgeable, but he expressed everything he knew in such a captivating, story-telling fashion. All you wanted to do was buckle up and enjoy the ride, immersing yourself in what he was teaching you.

You can tell that Innes has truly found his passion and really wants to spread it around. He was really patient when I was getting my grid north and grid bearings mixed up and when I was having a mental blank trying to locate us.

His background in teaching really shines through, but mainly he just cares and wants everyone to learn as much as we can in the 2-day time frame.Testamonial from We Are Explorers – Sydney

You can also follow up your newly acquired navigation skills with a Navigation Refresher walk. This is only available for participants who have already completed the Navigation Workshop. See the details of the Navigation Refresher Walk here.

The next Navigation Workshops are:

REFRESHER WALKS:

For those who have already completed our full Navigation Workshop, we offer single-day refresher walks where you have the opportunity to practice and polish your navigation skills in off-track environments. On these walks we promise NOT to guide you! … but we will help you problem-solve and set your own course.

Testimonials:

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you to the team, but in particular Innes for the awesome navigation course I attended on the weekend. I learned so much     and Innes’ passion and excitement for the mountains is just infectious. I can’t wait to practice and hone my skills. Innes however may have to answer to my husband for my blossoming map addiction. Thanks again, I’ll be back for sure!”

“I attended the navigation workshop at Mt Barney Lodge during July. It offered fantastic value for money with attentive and constructive instruction from Innes. Yes, the concepts and equipment were a little challenging in the first instance for the navigation neophyte, however the ability to apply my new knowledge on a couple of subsequent (guided) walks was so helpful.

The MBL facilities were, as always, clean and tidy, and the team’s assistance was super friendly and helpful. In fact I left with a sense of having been extended the hospitality of a family! On a freezy cold night in the middle of winter, the camp grounds were fully booked and the atmosphere very jovial.
I would recommend that future participants take an extra day following the workshop and put their new found skills to immediate use with a self-guided walk.

To Innes, Tracey, Nea, nav. classmate Hamish, and the rest of the MBL team….thanks again.”
