The Great Cane Toad Bust

by | Nov 20, 2022 | News

From their initial introduction in 1935, cane toads have wreaked havoc on our delicate ecosystems and biodiversity. With the ability to breed large numbers every year (one female can produce up to 70,00 babies per year and lives for up to 15 years!), they are a serious threat to Australia’s native wildlife. Estimates show there are more than 2 billion toads living across four states.

The Great Cane Toad Bust is Australia’s biggest cane toad control event, changing the game for Cane Toad control! Running from January 13 – 21, 2024. Join Mt Barney Lodge on Saturday, Janurary 13 for a night of Cane Toad busting.

Last year, Mt Barney Lodge collected approximately 630 toads over the course of the Great Cane Toad Bust, a week-long event to promote mass collection of toads. Our numbers contributed to a collaborative effort with the Boonah Landcare group with the local community collecting almost 9,362 toads in one week!

Whilst there is a push for toad collecting during the Great Cane Toad Busting week, this isn’t to say this is the only time to collect toads! Watergum has a database where you can register your collection numbers. They will also organise delivery/ collection of your frozen toads, which they are turning into lure baits for tadpole traps. This uses their own toxins against them, and the aim is to kill up to 4000 tadpoles in one go with each trap. Native frogs have no interest in the scent of this bait, so it exclusively captures cane toad tadpoles. Revolutionary!

Our current method of disposal is to collect toads in compostable bags, place in the fridge overnight and then freeze them. We have a commercial size compost where we dispose of all toads and they are turned into compost within 1 week! If you are in suburbia or don’t have access to a composting system, frozen toads can be disposed in your curbside bin the night before collection day.

It is important to ensure you can distinguish cane toads from native frogs, so check out Watergum’s identification resource. They also have many other handy resources on their website, so ensure you have a read of their website before heading out to collect!
