Life of a River Program

Day 1, Friday   2 November 2024

Check in to Mt Barney Lodge any time after 2pm. Just 90 minutes from Brisbane but a world away!  Settle into your room, stroll to the creek or visit the studio. At 5pm we will meet at the campfire for a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony with Gurruhman, an Ugarapul and Bidjari leader with ancestral connection to this land.  We will hear the stories of indigenous culture on this site, and also meet our host Innes Larkin, who will share his knowledge of the local geography, flora and fauna, bringing to life the stories of the river as inspiration for art making.

As the sun sets over the rugged mountain peaks, enjoy a glass of wine and dinner at the Heritage-listed Moringararah Homestead.

Day 2, Saturday   3 November 2024

9am Join Bronwyn in the studio for an overview of our weekend’s activities. We will consider an array of paintings by landscape painters throughout history, and across cultures, who have explored the life of rivers! There will also be an overview of drawing and painting processes to set us up for the time ahead.

After morning tea we will take a meditative walk to the river for a plein air drawing session; a beautiful place to draw the broader vista, the river view, the small details such as plant life, rocks, water and the sensory elements of weather and sound!

Lunch and afternoon tea will be served at the studio. After lunch, we will get started drawing up compositions on canvas and laying on some colour. We will consider approaches to composition, colour mixing, conventions for creating illusion of depth, and the diverse possibilities of mark making!

At 3.30pm we will finish up in the studio for the day, with time to relax before joining the group for a two-course dinner at the top homestead at 6pm.

Day 3, Sunday   4 November 2024

At 9am,  meet in the studio to continue a day of painting. As the day unfolds, it is fun to see diverse responses to place. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea will be served at the studio.

3.30pm is the official finish of our painting workshop. There is an option to stay on for Sunday night and enjoy an afternoon in the beautiful landscape, and a self-catered dinner with a checkout on Monday morning.
