Some facts:
Australians send approximately 150,000 tonne of plastic wrap per year to landfill – that is equivalent to 1 fully loaded Nimitz Aircraft Carrier, or every Aussie throwing out approximately 130kg.
Seem like a stretch? Just remember, pretty much everything that goes onto a pallet is then wrapped in plastic wrap, the average household creates 500kg of plastic waste.
Plastic Free July participants make a big difference by stopping around 300 million kg of plastic polluting the world each year.
Alternatives to Cling Wrap:
- Glass Jars
For smaller items, repurposed glass jars work perfectly. They have the see-through nature of plastic wrap and can be popped in the dishwasher after being used. Whether you buy mason jars or save up old jam jars, pickle jars, etc., this option is super affordable.
- Tin Foil
You can actually rinse and reuse tin foil a couple of times, unlike finicky plastic wrap. It may not be the most sustainable option here, but it’s a good start.
- Glass or Plastic Food Storage Containers
Food storage containers are a classic, plus the glass variety can often go from oven to table to fridge, reducing the need to wash multiple containers. To make this option even more sustainable, buy them second-hand.
- Oilcloth
Homemade food wraps made using oilcloth are both cute and reusable. You can easily purchase it by the yard on Amazon and elsewhere.
- Parchment or Wax Cloth
Use parchment or wax cloth to wrap your sandwiches for your packed lunch instead of baggies or plastic wrap. We suggest Bee’s Wrap, which is naturally antibacterial and can be cleaned with just water and dish soap.
- Fabric Bowl Covers
Easy to make with some elastic and fabric, these bowl covers look like swim caps. You can pop them in the washer to keep them clean.
- Bento Boxes
You don’t have to look for long to find gorgeous bento boxes that you can keep your lunch or leftovers in when storing them in the fridge or taking them to work.
- Two Plates
Easy peasy: Put food on one plate and invert another on top.
- Silicone Bowl Lids
Invest in silicone lids that fit on every bowl.
