Street Tree decorated for Christmas in Boonah

by | Nov 27, 2024 | Uncategorized

Household waste with a silver theme has been used to decorate a street tree in Boonah for Christmas.

Mt Barney Lodge used tetra packs which have a bright silver plastic lining, medicineblisterpacks, lids from dairy products, and aluminium can ring pulls.

BOSS (Boonah Organisation for a Sustainable Shire) is the local community organisation in charge of decorating the town in an attractive and eco fashion.

Tinsel is not on the decoration menu, as it is an environmental hazard as it is made from non-biodegradable plastic (and the little bits that always fall off will be around for hundreds of years to come). This year Mt Barney Lodge decided  to reuse waste that has a silver aliminium or plastic lining.
When strung on jute rope with a fishing swivel, this is as twinkly and eye-catching as any conventional christmas tree decoration.

This is the second year in a row that Mt Barney Lodge has decorated a street tree at the top of High Street, near the roundabout.

Last year our theme was giant yellow christmas baubles using leftover corflute Lock the Gate protest signs from our successful anti-CSG campaign in the Scenic Rim.

Best of all, all the 2024 tree decorations will be deconstructed in the new year and 100% recycled.

We have decorated with:

Tetra packs -these are made up of a number of components which are layered: paperboard (made from wood), polyethylene (a type of plastic) and aluminum.

Packaging material, aseptic carton package

When a Tetra Pak is recycled, all these component parts need to be separated out.
This is an energy-intensive and inefficient process. Worse, Tetra Pak production is a linear process. This means to make them, they need a constant supply of fresh virgin material (wood, oil and aluminum) for their manufacture. As the two layers of polyethylene (plastic) and aluminium, cannot be separated by the recycling process and remain combined as a “polymer”. The uses for this “polymer” is in the cement industry, or as low-cost housing material. The question arises, is there a genuine demand for this product, or is there a market because of an abundant supply of this waste material? Best to refuse tetra packs all together, but place them in the household recycle bin if you do use one.

Aluminium can ring pulls – Fun fact …. approximately 75% of aluminium ever produced is still in use today as it can be recycled endlessly without compromising any of its unique properties or quality. This is one of the most eco containers that we can use. The ring pulls don’t need to be seperated when recycling, if they detatch, just paced them inside the can and crush it. Containers For Change will give you 10 cents per can when recycled.

Blister Packs – Blister packs are made of various plastics, foils, and paper foils, which means they can’t be recycled in mainstream recycling. Every year, this amounts to an enormous amount of plastic waste which goes into landfill, where it takes hundreds of years to break down. In Boonah BOSS collects these (Julie Jackson), or in-store at Chemist Wharehouse

Jute string – cMade from natural fibres, it is suitable for a wide range of garden uses including securing plants and shrubs, as well as general tying and crafting. Jute is biodegradable and can be composted at the end of its life.

Fishing swivels – to be collected and reused again

Come and visit our 2024 tree at the top of high street when you are next in Boonah.

Or plan to attend the Boonah District Chamber of Commerce Boonah Street Festival on Thursday evening December 19, 2024 from 6pm.

This year the theme is ‘Light Up Our Future’ and there will be a Grand Parade with floats decorated to this theme.

If you are serious about reducing waster, consider sourcing your own eco decorations this Christmas.
You can also give eco experience gifts to reduce your impact on the planet – here are some of our eco experience gift suggestions- 7 Sustainable Christmas Gifts. We can create a customised voucher for you within the day.
