Join Mt Barney Lodge for Australias “Great Cane Toad Bust” this January!

by | Jan 7, 2025 | News

From their initial introduction in 1935, cane toads (Rhinella marina) have wreaked havoc on our delicate ecosystems and biodiversity. With the ability to breed large numbers every year (one female can produce up to 70,00 babies per year and lives for up to 15 years!), they are a serious threat to Australia’s native wildlife. Estimates show there are more than 200 million toads living across four states. Lets break that down into a number we can understand …. that is about 7 cane toads per Aussie!!

The Great Cane Toad Bust is Australia’s biggest cane toad control event. It has been an annual game changer! For one week from January 18th-26th in 2025 Watergum  is challenging Australians to trap as many toadpoles by day and toads by night as they can. By getting involved together, we can remove toads and clean up our environment, and create a safe haven for wildlife and your pets at home. Every cane toad counts!

Register with Watergum and collect toads at home, or join Mt Barney Lodge owner Tracey on Saturday January 18th from 7pm,  for a night of cane toad busting and native frog identification.

Toad busting participants have FREE CAMPING* for the night (one toad minimum must be collected per person to qualify!)
All other accommodation will have a 25% discount* on our weekend rate, to come along and watch or participate.
* Just use the discount code “TOAD BUST” when you book over the phone or in the comments section online. Discounts are not retrospective to current bookings.

Observers and those wanting to learn more about native frogs are more than welcome to tag along for the night walk.

Australia is home to many native frogs that are often mistaken for cane toads. so during this event participants will learn how to identify the difference between a cane toad and a frog. There will be opportunities to look for and identify onsite native frogs such as the Ornate Burrowing Frogand Pobblebonk along the way. Everyone will gather at the Office at 6.45 for a quick briefing and bring along their cane toad busting essentials. Children of all ages are welcome (Children under 5yrs will need a parent helper). There will be a prize for the person who collects the most cane toads, and each participant will receive a ‘Frogs of Brisbane’ poster to take home.

Cane toad busting on this targeted week and throughout the year assists us in reducing the breeding cane toad population at Mt Barney Lodge.

By involving the community we hope to educate and involve others in cane toad busting in their neighbourhoods and homes with friends and family, as well as showing participants how to collect and dispose of cane toads humanely according to current best practice, using the stepped hypothermia method.

Last year, Mt Barney Lodge collected approximately 630 toads over the course of the Great Cane Toad Bust, a week-long event to promote mass collection of toads. Our numbers contributed to a collaborative effort with the Boonah Landcare group with the local community collecting almost 9,362 toads in one week!
