Christmas Camp Cooking

by | Nov 9, 2021 | Recipes

As December kicks off and borders are opening back up, we can finally satisfy those itchy feet and head off on a Christmas camping trip. Arguably, the most important thing about Christmas is the food, but without the comforts of our kitchens and limited cooking resources, whipping up a Christmas feast while camping can be challenging. So, we wanted to give you our pick of Xmas camping recipes with a list of the best food to bring camping at Christmas. Get creative and cook using a cast iron 9-quart camp oven, which is available for hire from Mt Barney Lodge for $20.

Essential equipment required for campfire cooking:

  • 6–9-quart camp oven (available for hire)
  • BBQ plate to place over the fire (available for hire)
  • Heat proof or welding gloves (included in camp oven hire)
  • Plenty of firewood
  • Tin foil

SIDES DISHES

Bocconcini, basil and tomato skewers.

The ultimate Christmas kebabs. These skewers couldn’t be simpler. All you need are cherry tomatoes, bocconcini balls, basil, balsamic glaze, and some skewers. Hot tip: pick your basil fresh from our garden next to the office!

Another great Christmas camp food idea, we recommend these delicious beef Kebabs. They are easy to make and cook, especially when cooked over a bonfire on a barbeque plate, which can be hired from the office.

If you can’t get enough of cooking with a campfire, try this Bruschetta recipe and toast your bread over the fire for a smoked flavour. Don’t forget to get your basil fresh from the garden as well!

CAMPFIRE MAINS

When cooking in a 9-quart camp oven, correct fire preparation is essential. See our Dummies Guide to Cooking a Camp Oven Roast for instructions on how to make a suitable fire.

When it comes to the Christmas main meal, there is nothing more loved than a roast ham, and this Whiskey Glazed Camp Oven Roast is easily the best dutch oven recipe on the internet. With the ability to hire a camp oven at the office upon arrival, there is no excuse to miss out on a holiday Christmas roast.

SIMPLE DESERTS

Camping desserts are usually as easy as a marshmallow, stick and fire. However, after a taste of these Grilled Fruit skewers and this Grilled Peach recipe it will be hard to go back!

CHRISTMAS COCKTAILS

Save space on your trip out to Mt Barney Lodge and source your alcohol at the office. We sell local red and white wines, soft drinks, kombucha and a selection of locally brewed beers, perfect for pairing with some classy Christmas cocktails.

If you are a Rosé fan, this Cranberry Punch will be right up your alley. With ice and Sparkling Rosé available for purchase at the office and mint growing in Tracey’s herb garden, you would be silly not to give this easy camping cocktail a try.

For the white wine lover among us, this refreshing Sangria only needs a couple of items to be brought with you from the nearest supermarket. Experiment with flavours from Tracey’s herb garden, such as lemon myrtle or mint for an extra twist.

For the best kombucha drink for Christmas, look no further than this Sparkling Cranberry Mocktail. With rosemary growing in Tracey’s Garden and kombucha available for purchase at the office, you really couldn’t go wrong!
